| Fumes Send Penn. Co. Prison Workers to Hospital |

Fumes from a burning air conditioner sickened 14 employees outside the Dauphin County Prison on February 19, causing 13 officers and a nurse to be taken to four area hospitals. The employees were released after treatment for breathing problems, according to Diane McNaughton, spokeswoman for the county. No prisoners were affected, she said. The fumes came from an air conditioner that had caught fire at the county Work Release Center according to Warden Dominick DeRose. The workers, all working outside of the prison, began complaining of an odor. When other employees went to investigate, they also suffered the effects, he said. Prison officials called Dauphin County 911 around 4:45 p.m. about the fumes, DeRose said. Visitors were told to leave the building and the prison was put in lockdown, DeRose said. About 40 minutes later, the fire was discovered on the roof of the work-release center, which is about three blocks from the prison, according to county control. Enhaut Fire Company chief Charles Miller said when he arrived at the center, fire was shooting from a burning air conditioner on the roof and natural gas that fueled the unit also was burning. The fire was confined to the roof. Parts of the building sustained water damage, he said. The prisoners living at the work-release center were able to return to the building after firefighters left, Miller said. No injuries were reported. Miller said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. At the prison, no prisoners were affected by the fumes, DeRose said. The prison medical staff checked the health of all prisoners and staff members, DeRose said. |
