A counselor who works at the Williams P. Clements Jr. Unit suffered non-life threatening injuries after an inmate attacked her on February 18. The assault occurred just three weeks after the fatal stabbing of a prison employee at the maximum-security facility. Pamela Southerland, the victim of the attack, was treated at the Clements Unit infirmary and then went to an Amarillo hospital for further treatment, said Michelle Lyons, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Southerland possibly suffered a broken nose, Lyons said. Christopher Robert Mayer, 22, allegedly struck Southerland with his fists, Lyons said. Mayer encountered Southerland around 7 a.m. while being escorted to recreation by two officers. Mayer, who was not handcuffed or otherwise restrained, allegedly ran toward Southerland and began beating her. The officers were able to subdue Mayer quickly, Lyons said. Mayer is part of the prison's Program for Aggressive Mental Impaired Offenders. Southerland works under contract as a counselor in the program, Lyons said. Lyons said Mayer is serving a four-year sentence for two counts of aggravated assault, one count of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and one count of forgery of a commercial instrument, all out of Harris County. He had been at the Clements Unit since September 2001 and would have been eligible for parole on Feb. 26. He may now face additional assault charges, Lyons said. As a PAMIO inmate, Mayer is confined to his cell at least 23 hours a day, leaving only for recreation and showers, Lyons said. |
