| Ala. Man Gets Probation for Rape of Inmate |

A former maintenance man, who pleaded guilty to raping a woman in May while she was locked in her cell at the Chickasaw city jail, was placed on probation February 25. Mobile County Circuit Judge Rick Stout sentenced Sidney Williams Jr., 44, to 15 years in prison for first-degree rape, but suspended the sentence and placed Williams on five years of probation. Assistant District Attorney Caroline Siderius said after the hearing that she recommended the sentence to Stout, after agreement from the victim. Stout closely questioned the 34-year-old victim, Siderius and a detective involved in the case before agreeing to the recommendation. According to Siderius, Williams was working as a maintenance man at the Chickasaw city jail on a night late in May 2002 when he told a dispatch er he needed keys to get into a back area of the cell block to get some cleaning supplies. No cleaning supplies were kept in that area of the jail, Siderius said. She said Williams went to the victim's cell, let himself in and raped her while ordering two trustees to keep a lookout for him. The woman, who had been held overnight after being charged with writing a bad check, was released the next morning. About a day later, she told authorities she had been raped, the prosecutor said. Siderius said she decided to offer the deal to Williams' Mobile attorney, James Brandyburg, because the victim appeared 'highly traumatized' by the prospect of a trial and described her as 'very fragile.' 'I just didn't want to take the chance,' Siderius said. She said the victim has filed a civil suit against Williams and the city of Chickasaw. |
