Inmates released from the Multnomah Co. jail three weeks ago are committing new crimes and getting put back behind bars. Currently there are 1 in 5 inmates that are back in trouble or back in jail. When the Multnomah county jail opened its doors January 29th and released more than a hundred inmates because of budget cuts the inmates were happy to be out. Some were even gratefull to those who'd voted no on Measure 28. 'You know I prayed and it's like this day came, I'm happy. A message to the voters - thank you, thank you,' said Anita Ward. But deputies knew it was only a matter of time before police re-arrested offenders like Anita Ward - and brought them back to jail. Which in fact has happened, with nearly a dozen of the inmates let go, including Charles Schade who told KATU back on the January 29th how serious offenders, unlike himself, an accused thief, should stay in jail. 'They're criminals, they shouldn't be getting out this early,' said Charles Schade. Schade was re-arrested February 17. About 14 others aren't back in jail yet. They have warrants issued for their arrests because they never showed up for court appearances after being released. The release has created a subculture of re-offenders that are cycling through the revolving door of the Multnomah County jail. So far most of the offenders who've been released are accused of lower level crimes such as burglary, identity theft and drug possession. The sheriff's department said that if more jail beds get cut, they may have no choice but to release accused robbers, rapists, sodomists. |
