Inmate Shot on Morning of Release

The county lockup turned out to be a safer place than the streets of Seguin for a local man who suffered a shotgun blast to his lower leg Thursday.
A Guadalupe County Jail inmate was shot at his home in the 700 block of East Walnut Street early February 27, minutes after leaving the jail on the first day of his participation in a work release program.
Bernardo Jose Barrientos, 39, was shot in the right calf during an altercation with his roommate, authorities said. Police were called to the residence at 5:01 a.m., and found a shotgun believed to have been used in the shooting authorities said.
Barrientos told authorities he had been released from jail at about 4:30 a.m. Barrientos was taken to Guadalupe Valley Hospital before being transported via ambulance to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, where he was expected to undergo surgery. Barrientos' injury was not considered life threatening, and his condition was not available as of late Thursday afternoon.
The name of the shooting victim's roommate was being withheld by city officials, Seguin Public Information Officer Rafael Aviles said.
The shooting occurred shortly after Barrientos was released from the Guadalupe County Jail, where he had been held since Jan. 24 after pleading guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated. County Court-at-Law No. 2 Judge Frank Follis had sentenced Barrientos to 45 days in county jail and ordered him to pay a $400 fine. Upon arrival at his home at 729 E. Walnut St., Barrientos and his unidentified roommate argued over money, authorities said.
'He (Barrientos) claimed there was money missing from his wallet. There was a verbal exchange, and the victim was hit in the calf with a round from a shotgun,' Aviles said.
Police continued their search for the shooting suspect late Thursday. Investigators were waiting to speak with the victim before filing charges against the suspect.
