A Rikers Island inmate accused of sexually abusing a 6-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother was charged February 28 with trying to hire a hit man to kill the children and their mother. Nicholas Panton, 22, tried to hire an undercover detective posing as a hit man to kill the family, Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson said. Panton, who was indicted on conspiracy charges, was charged in October 2002 with sodomy, sexual abuse and child endangerment. Panton had baby-sat the siblings. Prosecutors said their mother discovered the abuse after girl contracted a sexually transmitted disease. Johnson said Panton is accused of offering the detective $3,300 to carry out the killings: a $300 down payment, $1,500 when the killings were carried out and the final $1,500 when the sodomy and sexual abuse charges were dropped because the witnesses were dead. Panton faces up to 50 years in prison on the sexual abuse charges and up to 75 years on the conspiracy charges. Panton's lawyer could not be reached for comment. |
