An inmate serving a 66-year term was subdued with pepper spray following the stabbing of a female correctional officer Tuesday morning at Craven Correctional Institution. Prison Superintendent David Chester said officer Sylvia Whitney, 42, of Washington, was stabbed in the left side and also suffered another superficial wound. She was airlifted by Marine rescue helicopter Pedro to Pitt Memorial Hospital. The hospital was unable to confirm her admission late Tuesday. Her alleged assailant, 52-year-old Thomas L. Herbin, was subdued by several nearby officers following the 10:30 a.m. attack, which Chester said happened in a 136-bed inmate dormitory. 'It is under investigation and has been turned over to the Craven County Sheriff's Department,' Chester said. 'All we know is that it occurred in a dormitory area. He approached the officer, perhaps there was some conversation and she was stabbed with a sharp weapon, perhaps scissors.' Chester said another inmate, 51-year-old Glenn Spencer, attempted to intervene and defend the officer and was also injured, suffering a small cut on his left shoulder. Spencer, from Hyde County, is serving a life sentence for second-degree murder. Chester said Herbin had been in the state penal system since 1982, after being convicted in Guilford County of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Herbin had just recently completed 20 days in isolation after being charged internally with a disciplinary act on Feb. 27. He was on janitorial duty before that and had not been reassigned to work. Chester said Herbin's last previous violation had been in late 2001, although he said, 'he had a number of rule violations dating back to his admission (1982).' Herbin had been in the Craven facility since November 2001. Whitney has worked at the prison since 1997. |
