The man who fired the shot that killed a rural Kentucky sheriff at a political rally and fish fry was sentenced to life in prison March 3 as part of a plea agreement. Danny Shelley, 31, agreed to testify against the two other men charged with plotting to kill Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron. Shelley will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years. If he had gone to trial and been convicted, he could have faced the death penalty. Jeff Morris, 35, and Kenneth White, 55, are charged with complicity to murder a police officer. Both have pleaded innocent. Morris, a former deputy, was challenging Catron in the May 2002 primary, and White was helping with Morris' campaign. Catron, 48, was shot minutes after delivering a re-election speech April 13, 2002, at the rally and fish fry at a volunteer fire department in Shopville. He was struck in the head by a single bullet fired from a nearby hillside. Shelley was caught minutes later, after he sped away on a motorcycle registered to Morris. During his term as sheriff, Catron was known for a tough stance on drug crime. His department became one of the few serving rural areas to use a helicopter to search for marijuana plants. Pulaski County Commonwealth's Attorney Eddy Montgomery consulted Catron's family about the plea agreement. |
