LA County May Settle Jail Suit for $2.5 Million

The county may pay $2.5 million to settle a lawsuit that claims jail mistreatment of protesters arrested during the 2000 Democratic National Convention.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors would have to approve the settlement recommended March 3 by the county Claims Board.
It involves more than 50 bicyclists who were arrested during the convention. Police said they blocked Metrolink tracks, according to a county memo.
The cyclists sued the city and county. The women claimed they underwent strip searches and body cavity searches in a county jail corridor in full view of each other.
The suit also charged that the bicyclists were denied telephone calls and medication and were imprisoned for 12 hours after all charges against them were dismissed.
The claims board also proposed a $725,000 settlement for three men who were hurt during an August 2000 riot at the Pitchess Detention Center.
Aaron Cunningham was left legally blind, Rory Fontanelle had a broken hand and was stabbed about 24 times and Ahmad Burwell suffered brain damage, uses a wheelchair and requires full-time care, according to the memo.
The board said federal law gives jail officials 'a legal obligation to protect inmates within their custody.'
