Twenty-four year-old Melissa Jernigan was arrested this past weekend on charges of criminal transmission of the HIV virus. She is now being held inside the Duval County (Fla.) jail after allegedly transmitting the disease to as many as 200 people. Melissa Jernigan is a well-known inmate at the Duval County Jail. She's been in and outside of the prison gates for years because of her continuous drug use. Behind bars for a week now, jail officials are taking extra precautions because of an incident that occurred on March 12. According to Chief Wyllie Hodges, 'She had something which appeared around her neck and she had a security blanket wrapped around her up to her neck.' The item turned out to be a paper towel wrapped tightly around her neck but it wasn't visible until officers opened up her cell.' According to Hodges, once the officer was inside her cell, 'She broke through the door and ran up to the second floor and climbed on the rail as if to jump.' Four officers subdued Jernigan by placing her in a restraint chair. This is apparently not the first time Jernigan was involved in such an incident, she was apparently involved in something similar back in May 2001. In May of 2001 Jernigan was charged with aggravated battery for repeatedly kicking Northeast Florida State Hospital employee Kelly Potts. He was attempting to restrain Jernigan who was under his care at Baptist Hospital. He was not able to subdue her and died a month later from injuries sustained during the incident. Jernigan served eight months in prison for her actions. With that in mind, jail officials say they aren't taking any chances. According to Hodges, 'Anytime she's out of the cell we'll probably have at least two officers there and we'll probably have her in shackles.' Jail officials say that she will only be allowed out of her cell one hour a day for a shower and exercise. In addition, officials also say they are keeping her isolated from other inmates because they fear she could harm others as well as herself. Jernigan will not face any additional charges for this weeks incident. The four officers who were involved in subduing Melissa Jernigan may receive HIV testing as a precautionary tactic. She is currently being held on $100,000 bail. |
