An inmate who escaped from prison was captured Thursday night after being missing for several hours, authorities said. John V. Woodard, 25, was discovered missing from the Mt. McGregor Correctional Facility in Wilton at 2:30 p.m., said Mike Houston, spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services. State police and Saratoga County Sheriff's Department set up road blocks and sent out canine units in the Saratoga County town, 30 miles north of Albany, he said. About five hours later, a motorist reported seeing Woodard on the side of a road in Greenfield Center, where police captured him, Houston said. Woodard was arrested less than 10 miles from the prison. He was arraigned on charges related to the escape. Woodard, who was serving a four-to-12-year term on a 1998 conspiracy conviction, was scheduled for parole hearing in February. Mt. McGregor is a medium-security facility with 290 inmates. Woodard escaped from a minimum-security wing with no perimeter fencing. The last escapee from the prison was in April 1995. |
