Ala. Executes Inmate for 1984 Murder

A man convicted of forcing a store clerk into a well and shooting her to death in 1984 was executed by injection March 13.
Michael Eugene Thompson, 43, made no final statement, but mouthed the words 'I love you' to his friend Mary Ann Gardner, a death penalty opponent who had asked Gov. Bob Riley for clemency.
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a petition claiming Riley failed to hold a proper clemency hearing for Thompson.
Thompson was convicted in the abduction and shooting death of Maisie Carlene Gray, 57, on Dec. 10, 1984.
According to court records, Thompson drove Gray to a well after robbing her. He made her get inside and shot her until he ran out of ammunition, the documents said.
None of Thompson's family attended the execution, although he had met earlier Thursday with his mother and three brothers.
Evelyn Elliott, Gray's daughter, said she was disappointed Thompson showed no remorse.
'He did not look in our direction or offer any apology,' said Elliot, who watched the execution with her two brothers.
Thompson is the second Alabama inmate executed by injection since the state made injection its primary method of execution last year.
