Inmate Dies After Struggle In Florida Jail

A 41-year-old inmate at Pinellas County Jail died March 11 after he became combative and detention deputies had to restrain him, the sheriff's office said.
Larry D. Germonprez, was booked March 7 on charges of leaving the scene of an accident, drunken driving, driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana, said Pinellas sheriff's spokesman Tim Goodman.
On the night of March 10, Germonprez was moved to the jail's medical wing after exhibiting odd behavior, including running around naked, Goodman said. The inmate was to have been given a medical evaluation the following morning.
But after Germonprez started banging on the door to his cell, a decision was made to move him to another cell where he could be observed more easily. A team of deputies entered his cell to move him at 6:40 a.m. March 11, and he became combative as they tried to restrain him, Goodman said.
Then Germonprez collapsed and became unresponsive and was rushed to Northside Hospital & Heart Institute, where he died at 7:10 a.m., Goodman said.
'I'm saddened by it all,'' said Germonprez's ex-wife, who asked that her name not be used. Six years ago the couple divorced, but they had two children together, a 7-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl. Germonprez had started visiting them.
She described her ex-husband as a drifter, moving from place to place and working different jobs. He had a college education and had at one point planned to teach, said the woman, who lives in Rotonda West.
'He was a happy-go-lucky, life-of-the-party type of person when I was with him,'' said the 36-year-old, who has since remarried.
