| $10,000 Vanishes from Wash. County Jail |

Police are trying to find out what happened to $10,000 that apparently disappeared from a safe at the Snohomish County Jail. The cash was brought to the jail in late February by a woman posting $20,000 bail for a drug suspect. Police were to have seized it March 14 under a court order alleging it was drug profits. But when detectives from the South Snohomish County Narcotics Task Force tried to serve the court order, $10,000 of the cash was missing, according to papers filed March 11 in Superior Court. Everett police are investigating what happened, court papers say. The investigation is still in an early stage, Deputy Police Chief Bob Stiles said. 'We've taken an initial report, and that's all I can tell you on it,' he said. A spokesman for the jail was not immediately available for comment. Everett police already are investigating why it took months for police to be alerted that a former jail cook allegedly broke the law by engaging in sexual misconduct with at least four inmates. That investigation was requested by the Snohomish County Executive's Office. Susan Neely, who oversees criminal justice issues for County Executive Bob Drewel, recently said she sought police assistance after reviewing corrections department records documenting three internal investigations of the cook last summer and fall. The former cook, a 37-year-old Everett woman, is the daughter of a high-ranking jail supervisor. Neely, who is out of the office this week, earlier said jail records she reviewed left her with a lot of unanswered questions and concerns about how allegations involving the former cook were handled. Police already have asked prosecutors to file up to four counts of second-degree custodial sexual misconduct against the woman. No arrests have been made, and the case remains under review. Jail operations have been under close scrutiny as county officials look for ways to rein in law-and-order spending, which now consumes nearly 70 percent of the county's annual general fund. For 2003, that is expected to be $113.5 million of the $165.2 million total. The jail attracted unwanted attention late last year when it logged more than $2 million in overtime, double the amount budgeted. Corrections department operations also received pointed criticism by a consultant hired to review county operations. |
