Prisoner Indicted in Alleged Plot to Kill Federal Prosecutor

A federal prisoner has been indicted on charges that he tried to arrange the killing of the prosecutor handling his case in exchange for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The indictment, filed under seal Feb. 27 in U.S. District Court in Seattle, was made public March 10. It alleges that Evert Eoff, who was awaiting trial on federal charges that he conspired to kill a man in 2001, plotted to have Assistant U.S. Attorney Bruce Miyake killed.
Miyake was pulled off Eoff's case early last month after authorities confirmed the plot, according to court documents.
The U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle has been especially concerned about security following the unsolved killing of prosecutor Thomas Wales in October 2001.
The new charges include solicitation to commit a crime of violence, use of the mail in the commission of murder-for-hire and attempted escape. Eoff, 40, has not entered a plea.
Eoff's lawyer, Michael Schwartz, said March 10 he had not seen the indictment, but that his client denies involvement and would plead innocent. Schwartz said he expected an arraignment either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Eoff pleaded innocent to the earlier charges.
According to the indictment, Eoff mailed a form asking for permission to be visited at the detention center by someone identified as R.R. He offered R.R. a Harley-Davidson in exchange for Miyake's killing, the indictment says.
It also alleges that Eoff tried to escape in January.
Eoff was already facing a maximum of life in prison if convicted on the earlier charges, but was unlikely to receive the maximum, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Friedman, who is now handling his case. The new charges could add more than 30 years to the penalty.
