| Ohio Inmate Gives Up His Perch on Antenna |

A Mansfield Correctional Institution inmate stayed atop a 95-foot prison television antenna for about 14 hours before coming down early Saturday morning. Sgt. Chad McGinty of the Mansfield post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said the inmate, 26-year-old Michael Haas of Franklin County, climbed down from the tower about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. Haas climbed the antenna, which is inside the prison's wire fence next to the recreation yard, about 2:45 p.m. Friday. 'We don't know why he did it,' said Andrea Dean, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. 'He wanted to talk to an inmate who used to be his cellmate, then he said he wanted to talk to someone about his medical concerns.' Dean said it was unclear how Haas was able to climb the tower unnoticed. He is serving a seven-year term in Franklin County for felonious assault, carrying a concealed weapon and theft. He entered the prison in 1999 and was due to be released in 2006. Dean said a similar incident involving Haas occurred in 1999, when he climbed onto a tower at the Southeastern Correctional Institution near Lancaster. In that case, he came down in less than an hour. MANCI Warden Margaret Bagley-Bradshaw said Haas picked a long, cold night to spend on the tower. The patrol will charge Haas, she said. 'He'll be charged with violating rules of conduct, and he'll be spending some time in disciplinary control, sort of like being thrown in the brig,' she said. |
