Hawaii Parole Chairman Resigns

Gov. Linda Lingle accepted the resignation of Hawaii Paroling Authority chairman Al Beaver on March 11.
Beaver's resignation was effectively immediately.
Beaver has been chairman of the Paroling Authority since 1997 and he's been at the center of a string of controversies.
Former Gov. Ben Cayetano put Beaver on paid leave in November, while the state investigated whether Beaver wrongly tried to get prisoner Chad Wilderman's armed robbery sentence commuted.
The Department of Public Safety investigated allegations that Beaver improperly ordered his staff to prepare a commutation request for a prison inmate and had personal business dealings with another man given an early discharge from parole.
The governor had asked Attorney General Mark Bennett to review the investigation, and later communicated to Beaver that he could either resign or she would remove him from the post.
'We informed Mr. Beaver that if he didn't resign, we would proceed with the procedure as set forth in the statute to remove him for cause. He chose to resign,' Bennett said.
'The handwriting was on the wall as far as we were concerned. We went through the investigation and we felt that we could fight this thing, but the cost, the time, the stress, just wasn't worth it,' Beaver's attorney, Paul Cunney, said.
Bennett would not say whether Beaver or anyone else will face criminal charges in the case.
Beaver's lawyer said his client committed no crime.
'He said, 'I'm guilty of being stupid. Guilty of trusting a friend.' That's what he's guilty of. There's no corruption here. He didn't get anything. He didn't accept any money. He didn't have any services at his house,' Cunney said.
Cunney said Beaver was mislead by a parole officer about one case and not fully informed about the parolee's background before approving his release. That parole officer quit last fall.
Beaver will retire with a full pension of between $17,000 and $34,000 a year.
