Inmate Advocate Convicted of Fraud

Published: 03/24/2003

An advocate for inmates was convicted last week of defrauding the charitable group he ran for 25 years of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
A federal jury found John A. Fidler Jr. guilty of 12 counts of mail fraud and 38 counts of wire fraud for taking money from the Berks County, Pa., Prison Society.
Fidler's bail was revoked after the verdict. He faces a 3- to 5-year prison sentence, prosecutor Robert Goldman said.
Investigators said Fidler paid himself to at least $300,000 in bonuses between 1997 and 2001 and doctored records to keep the bonuses secret.
During the trial, society employees testified that Fidler denied them raises and scrimped on office expenses to produce budget surpluses that he would then pocket.
'They trusted him. They believed him. He violated their trust,' Goldman said.
Fidler's attorney, Paul Yatron, did not return phone calls after the verdict. He had argued that the volunteer board that directs the society had authorized the bonuses.
The society, which provides bail money and social services to inmates at the Berks County Prison, fired Fidler in 2002, two months after an employee noticed the discrepancies.
