| Calif. Inmate Escapes from Prison |

Law enforcement officers have found no trace of a 24-year-old California Institution for Men inmate who escaped from the prison Friday night, officials said. State and local law enforcement officers searched Saturday for Robert Raymond Nira, a Latino weighing 140 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes, about 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a slender build, said Lt. Arioma Sams of the prison. Nira was discovered missing about 8:45 p.m. Friday. 'An investigation into the escape is now ongoing,' Sams said Saturday afternoon. 'We are continuing to look for him. We have officers out on the field.' Investigations indicate Nira may have been injured during the escape. At the fence line officers found a prison-issued blanket apparently used to protect him from the barbed wire as he climbed over. Nira was held at a minimum-security cell block where inmates are not considered to be an escape risk, said Sgt. Don Glucksman. Nira was originally sentenced to state prison for second degree robbery with use of a firearm. He was incarcerated at the prison Feb. 14 for a parole violation, Sams said. A prison officer learned of the escape at about 8:40 p.m. from a note suspected to have come from another inmate, Sams said. Staff was later notified about the possibility of an escape, and an emergency count was conducted, Sams said. Nira is said to have a tattoo on his back and is from Riverside County. He has been a landscaper for a restaurant, a police report said. Officers from the state Department of Corrections, the Chino Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department conducted the search Friday night and Saturday. |
