Polk County sheriff's investigators Sunday charged an inmate with helping his cellmate in a detailed scheme to escape from the jail. Sandchase Cody, 24, gave Shenard Dumas, 24, his Social Security number and jail identification armband, detectives said. So it was Dumas rather than Cody who was taken from South County Jail near Frostproof to the Bartow central jail for release on bail, an arrest report said. Dumas was released from custody after a bondsman posted $50,000 bail that was intended to gain the release of Cody. On Sunday, Cody was charged with one count of conspiracy and one count of being a principal in an escape. A jail identification armband contains a photo of the inmate. But officials at the jail said they were tricked because Dumas resembles Cody. 'With their size, weight, complexion and hair, there was definitely enough on the armband not to see a difference,' said sheriff's Capt. James Hogan. Dumas remained on the run Sunday evening. He had been facing drug, kidnapping and armed robbery charges. For several months, Dumas and Cody shared the same jail dorm in the South County Jail. Since December, Cody has been awaiting trial on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The scam began March 12 when Dumas told Cody he would send a portion of his $6,000 tax return to Cody's relatives if Cody helped him escape, the arrest report said. On March 17, Cody told detention deputies he had lost his armband. Cody gave Dumas his old armband, and Dumas pulled his hair to the side to look like the jail photo of Cody, officials said. Later that week, Dumas -- posing as Cody -- requested to be moved to protective custody. When Cody's $50,000 bail was ready Friday, Dumas was pulled from isolation, taken to Bartow and released. Cody's relatives never received any money, officials said. |
