A man who stabbed a jailer three times during a failed attempt to escape from the Klamath County Jail last month was sentenced March 19 to more than 23 years in prison. James Walter Werby, 26, of California, was immediately transported to a corrections facility in Salem after entering a guilty plea to charges of attempted aggravated murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree assault. Klamath County Circuit Judge Richard Rambo imposed the sentence of 280 months in prison. Werby, known to have gang affiliations in California, expressed no regret for his actions. When asked if he had any comments, he said that bad events happen that can't always be controlled. 'I love all my comrades,' Werby added, a possible reference to fellow gang members. Werby and another jail inmate, Jacob Ryan Allen, tried to escape from the Klamath County Jail on Feb. 25 by taking corrections deputy Kerry Hitchcock hostage. Jailers, backed up by patrol deputies and city police, stormed the two men and subdued them about 10 minutes later. Allen was sentenced to serve three consecutive prison terms totaling 20 years for his role in the unsuccessful escape. State corrections officials immediately put Allen in the 'Intensive Management Unit,' the most secure facility in the state corrections system. Werby was whisked out of Klamath County just after the negotiated plea became official last week. He was taken to a Department of Corrections facility in Salem, where he, too, is expected to be held under maximum security. Klamath County Deputy District Attorney Mark Costello said that Werby plunged a shank, made from a metal broom assembly, into the back of Hitchcock's head three times. Hitchcock has recovered from her wounds and is back to work at the Klamath County Jail, where she has worked for the past five years. |
