| Ariz. Prison Officer Killed in Van Crash Had Valid License |

A corrections officer killed in a one-vehicle accident last week did have a valid Arizona drivers license. Layton Eugene Mowery, 74, had worked about 1.5 years at Correctional Services Corp., a private company that runs the prison called Florence West. He was driving a company van without passengers eastbound on Interstate 10 about two miles west of the Trico-Marana Road exit when he lost control at 11:30 a.m. March 17 said officer David Kleinman of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Florence West is a minimum-custody facility housing 750 inmates. Five hundred of them are DUI offenders, and the others failed to complete court-ordered supervision, such as parole, deputy warden Charles Goldsmith said. Mowery's duties included driving, sometimes daily, depending on the work he was given, Goldsmith said. Correctional service officers are required to have a valid Arizona license. Previous driving records are not checked, Goldsmith said. 'Officer Mowery was a very dedicated and loyal employee,' he said. Mowery, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene after the van rolled three times and he was ejected. Calls to Mowery's relatives were not returned. |
