A man visiting his cousin in prison will be staying much longer than he expected. David Nieves, who was living in Florida, wanted to visit cousin Benjamin Gonzalez March 19 at the Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution. But before allowing him in, the department did a routine background check of his social security number and birthdate. The information matched that of David Gonzalez, who escaped from the Connecticut prison system in 1992. When Nieves turned up at the prison that night, state police were waiting for him. He admitted he was David Gonzalez and was arrested on an escape charge, police said. Gonzalez, who still had two years left on a drug sentence in 1992, is now being held at the New Haven Correctional Center. |
