Friends of a corrections officer who works at the state prison in Lansing say the officer was stabbed by an inmate with a makeshift knife Friday night, and the officer's panic button -- part of a two-way radio system -- didn't work. Kansas City police officers use similar panic buttons on their radios. Sgt. Derek Mccollum said when an officer hits the panic button,"the troops are pretty much on the way." But people close to the assaulted prison officer said the panic button didn't work when it was needed. Prison officials confirmed there was an assault Friday night, but they would not reveal any details because the incident is under investigation. However, a prison official did say that prior to every shift, every panic button is checked to make sure that it works. And immediately after the assault Friday, every panic button was checked again, and all the buttons worked, the official said. Prison officials said the officer's injuries were not life-threatening. The injured officer was at home Monday night after receiving treatment. |
