An inmate serving time for concealing stolen property and vehicle theft escaped from the Dick Conner Correctional Center, officials said Wednesday. He surrendered to a prison work crew in Cleveland Thursday afternoon, Corrections Department spokesman Jerry Massie said. Emmanuel G. Berry, 32, walked away from the prison's minimum-security unit sometime before the 8 a.m. head count March 19. Berry was serving 25 years for Oklahoma County convictions of concealing stolen property and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, prison records state. The housing unit from which Berry escaped is a dormitory-style building that keeps 250 inmates, Corrections Department spokesman Jerry Massie said. The building is outside the prison's security fence. This is the second such escape from the prison within the past year. In March of last year, inmates David Leon King, 21, and Bobby Satawake, 19, walked away from the minimum-security unit at the prison. They were caught shortly after. In February 2002, another inmate escaped. Osage County prosecutors alleged that a prison food service worker helped inmate Scott Marsee, 39, flee the prison. He was caught in Mexico on June 2. Berry has a lengthy criminal history dating back to 1991. His convictions include larceny, forgery, concealing stolen property, auto theft and second-degree burglary. Berry was scheduled to have a parole hearing in June, corrections records state. |
