Police charged an inmate at the Clay County Jail with the rape and kidnapping of a 3-year-old girl in 1986 after DNA evidence linked him to the crime. David J. Kaiser, 35, was charged Friday with two counts of capital sexual battery. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison. He is already serving a 50-year sentence for kidnapping a woman in Jacksonville in 1992. The Orange Park toddler was kidnapped from her bed in the middle of the night, driven a few miles away in a stolen truck and raped, according to an affidavit. She was abandoned on the road and rescued when neighbors heard her cries. Semen samples collected from the girl were submitted in November to a DNA database system. Kaiser was in the database because he is a convicted offender. After a preliminary match, officials tested a cheek swab from Kaiser, which confirmed the match. Prosecutors are considering plans to link Kaiser to similar crimes that occurred in the same neighborhood where Kaiser and the victim lived, said Shauna Wright, director of the State Attorney's Office in Clay County. Two young girls were taken from their homes, sexually assaulted and released, one in 1984 and one in 1986. |
