| Al-Arian Moved From Fla. Jail To Federal Custody |

Federal officials have moved Sami Al-Arian and three co-defendants from a Florida county jail to the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County for security reasons. Al-Arian, a former University of South Florida computer engineering professor, is accused of heading the Palestinian Islamic Jihad's U.S. operations. The government says it is a terrorist group responsible for 100 murders in Israel and its territories. Federal officials cited security reasons for the move, but declined to give further details. Nicholas Matassini, Al-Arian's attorney, said the federal complex is an hour away and will make consultations with his client difficult. He said he plans to file a motion asking for Al-Arian to remain at the Hillsborough County Jail, though such motions are rarely granted. Al-Arian's wife, Nahla Al-Arian, said her husband was being placed in solitary confinement and his phone and visitor privileges would be limited. He called her after arriving at the complex Thursday. 'This is opening my eyes to things that I thought only happened in dictatorships,' Nahla Al-Arian said. 'This means more trouble, more hardships for me, my kids and for him.' Al-Arian's bond hearing in federal court ended Tuesday, but the judge has not yet released a ruling. Al-Arian was arrested with three co-conspirators on Feb. 20 on racketeering, conspiracy and other charges, and the government has portrayed him as intricately involved with Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which the government says is responsible for 100 murders in Israel and its territories. Ghassan Zayed Ballut, Sameeh Hammoudeh and Hatim Naji Fariz reported to Al-Arian, federal prosecutors said. |
