Six Essex County, Mass., corrections officers were placed on leave after allegedly handcuffing a retarded inmate and forcing him to kneel and eat cake, Sheriff Frank Cousins said. Cousins said there were at least two and perhaps three episodes on March 30 in the infirmary at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Middleton. The incidents were recorded, and the tape has been given to the jail's internal affairs investigators, he said. The six were placed on paid administrative leave. Numbers for the officers could not immediately be located and they could not be reached for comment Thursday. The inmate has been jailed on drug charges for about two years, Cousins said. He's been examined by jail medical staff and appears fine, he said. The officers are white, the inmate is black. Cousins said he didn't learn about the events until Tuesday, when a nurse in the infirmary reported it. The officers were promptly escorted off jail property. ''Am I surprised by it? Yes.'' Cousins told the Boston Herald. ''These things don't happen here. We've put a lot of energy and time into training. We take all of these issues very, very seriously.'' Cousins said he was puzzled why his officers would act inappropriately when the digital cameras in the infirmary are in plain view. |
