For the second time in six weeks, a fight in a dayroom at Cook County Jail in Ill.has sent three inmates to outside hospitals with stab wounds, authorities said Tuesday.
Cook County sheriff's office spokesman Bill Cunningham said inmates fought on a maximum-security tier in Division 10 of the jail, which is in the 2900 block of South California Avenue. About 50 inmates were being kept in the room on parole violations when a gang-related brawl broke out, Cunningham said.
Several homemade knives used in the fight were recovered, and charges were possible, he said.
The most seriously hurt inmate, a 24-year-old, was stabbed in the back and was in serious condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital. Cunningham said a 33-year-old inmate also was being treated there, and a 26-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital. Two others were treated for injuries at the scene.
On Oct. 27, a gang fight in the same jail division injured seven, including three seriously.
