| Judge Orders Convicted Killer Back to State Prison |

A Georgia Superior Court judge has ordered that convicted police killer Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin be sent back to state prison after an alleged attempt to escape from the Fulton County jail last week. Judge Stephanie Manis said March 28 that she was satisfied with the county's arguments that faulty locks at the jail made it not secure enough to guarantee it could hold Al-Amin. 'I have heard evidence and it is indisputable that the locks can be and are routinely jammed by inmates,' Manis said. Sheriff Jackie Barrett, whose office runs the jail, fired chief jailer Shirlie Green after she testified March 26 that eight of the 12 doors on a maximum security wing that held Al-Amin had broken locks and inmates could leave their cells whenever they wanted. Al-Amin and two other inmates got out of their cells, cut a screen and attempted to break a window so they could lower themselves out of the jail with a rope made of sheets, officials said. Al-Amin, known as H. Rap Brown when he was a black militant leader in the 1960s, was convicted last year in the shooting death of Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy Ricky Kinchen, 38, in March 2000. He was sentenced to life without parole. The 59-year-old former Muslim leader in Atlanta was transferred to the jail from the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville on Dec. 12 so he could meet with his lawyers during his appeal. |
