A county Central Jail inmate died after an eye-gouging fight with his cellmate, authorities said last week. Deputies saw two men fighting in a sixth-floor cell at about 7:15 a.m. March 27. They entered and found that both men had had their left eyes gouged out, according to a statement by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. Joel Patrick Varnera, 48, was not breathing. He was taken to a hospital, where he died. The cause of death remained under investigation, the county medical examiner's office said. His cellmate, William David Pearson, 39, was taken to the jail infirmary. There was no immediate word on his condition as of March 29. The men's hometowns were not immediately disclosed. The motive for their fight remained under investigation. Varnera was being held on drug charges and Pearson had been jailed for theft, sheriff's spokesman Chris Saunders said. |
