| Youth Prison Officer Accused of Smuggling |

A male officer at a Colorado youth prison is accused of giving female inmates alcohol, according to the Department of Corrections. Trenton Lutz, 26, is accused of having contraband - alcohol and a camera - in the Pueblo prison, said Alison Morgan, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. The department has forwarded the case to prosecutors. A female officer is also under investigation, but Morgan declined to say why. Both Lutz and the female officer are on administrative leave. Lutz could not be reached for comment on March 27. Morgan said the department also is seeking a search warrant to look at the officers' bank accounts, but she declined to elaborate. The facility, which houses about 220 youth violators charged as adults, has been plagued with sex scandals over the past year. 'It's clear that with this investigation still going and the charges that are being made, (Department of Corrections Director Ray Ortiz) is sending a very clear message that this program is important, that staff misconduct will not be tolerated, will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted,' Morgan said. Last month, former Youth Offender System officer Alicia Bramall pleaded guilty to having sex with two male inmates. Bramall, 35, was sentenced to six years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender. She cannot have contact with children younger than 18, including her own. Last year, former officers Gary Neal, 46, and Steve Chavez, 39, pleaded guilty to having sex with underage female prisoners. They were sentenced to 18 months in jail. Duane Coleman, 38, was also accused of forcing the girls to have sex. He pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial. Only six females are housed in the youth facility. They will be moved to a specialized unit at the Women's Correctional Facility in Canon City, Morgan said. |
