Published: 04/07/2003

A Massachusetts prison officer was charged in federal court March 27 with trying to smuggle heroin to inmates.
Mark O'Brien, 42, of Billerica, was charged with heroin distribution, possession and conspiracy charges.
Prosecutors alleged O'Brien, a corrections officer at the Billerica House of Correction, agreed to smuggle heroin to three inmates in return for the painkiller Oxycontin.
Law enforcement officials, who had learned of the scheme, arrested O'Brien on March 26 after he purchased heroin from an undercover agent.
O'Brien was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.
