| Bomb Scare Closes Mich. County Jail |

A suspicious package shut down the St. Clair County Jail in Port Huron on March 25 for about three hours. The package, wrapped in duct tape and mailed to the jail, turned out to be a shirt box containing an unloaded .38 caliber revolver and a box of ammunition. The sheriff department, Michigan State Police and U.S. Postal Service are investigating where the box, which had no return address, came from. 'Someone may have been sending it to us to have (the gun) destroyed,' Sheriff Dan Lane said. 'I don't believe at this point in time there was any malicious intent.' He did not know if charges would be filed in connection with the incident. Lane said a worker in the jail's service bureau about noon turned the parcel over to her supervisor after noticing odd things including a misspelling of the word 'sheriff' on the package's address. The package also had an 'extremely large number of stamps,' Lane said. The jail supervisor wrapped the package in a white sheet and placed it in the jail parking lot, which was partially cordoned off by officers until a state police bomb squad arrived at about 2:40 p.m. While the bomb squad examined the package, bailiffs blocked the north doors to the nearby county courthouse, which shares a parking lot with the jail. Proceedings inside the courthouse were stalled as corrections officers waited for an all-clear signal before escorting inmates from the jail to their court appearances. Several area residents who had visits scheduled with inmates at the jail were turned away by jail officials. Neither the jail or the courthouse were evacuated during the incident. |
