An inmate accused of murdering an Edwardsville woman last spring faces charges that he allegedly squirted urine in the face of an officer at the Madison County Jail. On March 26, Madison County State's Attorney Bill Mudge charged Jeremy Crawford, 22, with aggravated battery after Crawford allegedly filled a plastic bottle from the jail commissary with urine and squirted it in the nose, mouth, and shoulders of Sgt. Rick Pyatt. The incident occurred between 9 and 9:30 p.m. on March 20 inside Crawford's cellblock. Pyatt had entered the cell after he saw that Crawford had a broom handle inside. Crawford faces a jury trial on May 12 on charges that he shot and killed June L. Sanders, 22, in Edwardsville. The murder occurred about 4 p.m. on April 18, 2002 at the corner of Meredocia Avenue and Logan Street in Venice. He also faces charges of aggravated battery with a firearm for allegedly shooting Yulanda Cole in the leg. 'People like that make it a little bit more difficult because they've got nothing to lose,' Madison County Sheriff Bob Hertz said of Crawford. 'You charge him with aggravated battery, what difference does it make?' At least three other inmates were involved in the incident although Crawford was the only one to squirt urine, said Sgt. John Lakin, chief of detectives. Officers used pepper spray and K-9 dogs to subdue rowdy inmates and remove Crawford from his cell. A search of his cell produced several shampoo, lotion, and other plastic bottles filled with urine and feces. Crawford purchased the bottles at the jail commissary, a practice permitted by a state mandate, Hertz said. 'How do you get feces in a bottle?' Lakin asked. Hertz said he does not recall any incidents at the jail that were as organized as last week's attack apparently was, although there have been incidents in which inmates have thrown feces against the wall or at each other. |
