An inmate who reported strange sounds coming from a neighboring cell helped thwart an apparent escape attempt last week from the Monroe County jail, sheriff's officials said. Monroe County Jail Administrator Darwin Paz said corrections officers were told by an inmate that he had heard scratching sounds emanating from a neighboring cell. When officers investigated, they found the 33-year-old inmate had used a makeshift tool broken off of a piece of furniture in the cell to scrape away at the mortar around one of the cement blocks that make up the interior of each cell. His efforts were discovered late March 23 and the damage repaired several hours later. Had the inmate been able to scrape away the entire mortar joint, he would still have faced a second mortar joint, an exterior brick wall, and a three-story drop to the ground before he could have left the building. The inmate, Robert Cordrey, is being charged with attempted escape and damaging police property. He was being held in lieu of a $500,000 cash bond while awaiting trial on two charges of criminal sexual conduct. |
