The deputy chief warden at Nagoya Prison was indicted March 4 on charges of fatally assaulting an inmate, prosecutors said. The Nagoya District Public Prosecutors Office charged Mikio Otomaru, 46, with violence and cruelty by a special public officer. This is the third time that prosecutors have indicted a Nagoya Prison warden over fatal violence against inmates. Six others were earlier charged with fatally assaulting two other inmates in May and September last year, respectively. Otomaru used a high-powered firefighting hose to spray water at the inmate's hip on Dec. 14, 2001, damaging his rectum, according to the indictment filed with the Nagoya District Court. The victim died in the predawn hours of the following day as a result of the injury. |
