A corrections officer at the Madison Correctional Institution in London, Ohio, died of a heart attack while trying to stop an inmate from hanging himself with a bedsheet, prison officials said. Michael Douds and another officer managed to stop the inmate from killing himself on Saturday, but during the struggle Douds collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Douds, 51, had worked at the London prison for 14 years. His wife, Linda, said he took the job because it paid better than the car dealership where he had worked. She said her husband had no history of heart trouble. The State Highway Patrol is investigating the death. Warden Alan Lazaroff said the suicidal inmate, who wasn't identified, has been transferred to another Ohio prison. |
