State prisons officials now believe three Halawa prison escapees squeezed out of Halawa's main gate, and officials admit there was no officer on duty there at the time of the breakout. KITV uncovered details of how the men escaped from their cells and got out of the building on April 4. They are still at large. The trio broke out from a building, in the 'special needs facility' at Halawa. State prison officials refuse to describe in detail how they think the men escaped, but law enforcement sources told KITV how the plan worked. Sources said two inmates in one cell and one in another broke through their cell walls and may have used 'metal bars' to dig their way through to a utility area between the two cells. Prison employees did not notice the holes, which were quite small. 'I don't want to go into the nuts and bolt of that. They were enough to get through,' acting Public Safety director Jim Propotnick said. Once in the utility area, sources said the inmates removed air conditioning vents from the floor, creating a hole for them to jump through to a larger utility room in the basement. Next, sources said the inmates forced their way out of a locked door to the prison yard. They didn't have to go far towards freedom. The door was just a few steps away from the unguarded main prison gate. 'The [officer] at the shack, at the front gate, would come inside the prison and help making the flesh count. And it was during the time that he was in the prison, doing whatever it was that he was doing, that they exited,' Propotnick said. Prison officials have made an immediate change. 'Right now, there is [an officer] on duty at the front gate at all times,' Propotnick said. The gate was chained shut, but prison officials now believe the men pushed the gates out, creating a small enough hole to sneak through. The escapees would have been able to study the officer's movements and the gate from the window of their cells to plan their escape beforehand. |
