| N.J. Jail Inmate Dies After Scuffle with Officers |

Officials are investigating how a Gloucester County Jail inmate died Wednesday morning shortly after a scuffle with corrections officers. Bernard A. King, 32, was unresponsive when officials found him lying face down in a holding cell, said county prosecutor's office spokesman Ed Sholinsky. Officials were awaiting the results of an autopsy. Sholinsky gave this account: King was brought to the jail about 3 a.m. Wednesday after being arrested in Monroe on a charge of violating a temporary domestic restraining order. Officials placed him in a medical screening pod along with 28 other newly arrived inmates. The pod is standard for inmates being transferred or admitted to the county jail in lieu of bail. About 8 a.m., King began creating a disturbance in the screening pod and then scuffled with corrections officers who attempted to subdue him. The officers then placed him in an elevator, where he again scuffled with officers. He was then handcuffed, shackled and placed alone in a holding cell. When officers checked on him at about 9 a.m., they found him unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at Underwood-Memorial Hospital at 9:50 a.m. |
