A convicted drug dealer being led from a court hearing attacked a high school student who works part-time as a jail officer and escaped, police said. Phillip M. Lee, 27, assaulted the 18-year-old officer while walking Tuesday from the Randolph County (Ind.) Courthouse in eastern Indiana to the nearby county jail, authorities said. Lee then broke into a home, where he tied up a woman, exchanged his jail uniform for a suit belonging to the woman's husband and drove off in the couple's car, police said. Officers found the stolen car about 25 miles away in Richmond, but Lee remained at large as of April 9, Randolph County Sheriff Jay Harris said. The officer was treated at a hospital for injuries suffered when a handcuffed Lee punched him, kicked him and sat on him, Harris said. The attack occurred as the officer, who was alone and unarmed, led Lee through an alley near the jail. Lee was apparently able to wriggle out of the handcuffs before breaking into the house and tying up the woman. 'The entire time he kept apologizing to her,' Winchester Police Chief Dwight Albrecht said. The officer was participating in a program that allows high school students to work during part of the school day. Harris said he planned to review whether students would continue to escort prisoners without supervision. State records show that Lee has at least six convictions and was sentenced last year to 20 years in prison for drug-related charges in Wayne County. He was in Randolph County for a hearing on other pending drug-related charges. |
