Officers at a maximum-security prison in Greene County can wear American flag pins on their uniforms -- at least for now. The pins have become a sticky issue at the State Correctional Institution at Greene. Officers want to wear pins depicting American flags and yellow ribbons, saying it's a show of support for U-S troops in Iraq. But the state Department of Corrections says it's a uniform violation. The department once warned that officers would be disciplined for wearing them. But now, the DOC says the corrections officers can wear the pins while the department reviews the issue. But there's a catch: The officers can only wear flag pins and not a yellow ribbon. A spokeswoman for the officer's union says the DOC probably made the decision because the officers were allowed to wear flag pins following the September eleventh terrorist attacks. Officers say the issue is important because many of their co-workers are or have been in the military. |
