The Alabama House passed a bill April 1 making it a crime for corrections officers or other prison officials to have sexual relations with an inmate. The bill now goes to the Senate, where a similar bill died last year. The bill is supported by the Alabama Department of Corrections. The sponsor, Rep. Barbara Boyd, said Alabama is one of only four states that does not have a law 'to protect inmates from abuse.' 'It will protect people from custodial sexual misconduct,' Boyd said. Boyd, a retired school teacher, has said the need for the legislation was highlighted in 2001 when some parents complained their daughters were sexually abused at the Alabama Department of Youth Services' Chalkville campus. Several employees were fired and others quit during an investigation that originally involved 15 workers. |
