Nonviolent, model state inmates could qualify for extra time off their sentences under a compromise bill approved last Monday by the Mississippi House. The Senate also must act before the bill can go to the governor. Lawmakers have tried to reduce numbers of inmates in prison to give some relief to the Mississippi Department of Corrections. 'We're still gaining inmates at a percentage much faster than they are exiting,' said House Penitentiary Committee Chairman Bennett Malone, D-Carthage. Malone said the compromise would allow some trusties to earn 20 days off their sentence for 30 days they work. Current law gives trusties 10 days off per month worked. He said in years when the MDOC is running a deficit, the bill allows the governor to grant an extra three days off sentence. House Bill 487 would also increase to $75 a month the supervisory fees charged to inmates on parole. |
