| D.C. Jail Health Inspections To Resume |

The D.C. City Council has passed emergency legislation that would require health officials to regularly inspect the District's jail. Under the bill, the city's health department is required to conduct three inspections per year and report back to the council. The council took the action after a 32-year-old lawsuit over conditions at the jail was recently terminated. Council members said the end of the court oversight means that the oversight by the council must be strengthened. However, aides for Mayor Anthony Williams told the Washington Post that more oversight of the jail isn't needed and that the mayor might veto the bill. Council member Kathy Patterson has said conditions at the jail remain poor and she has cited a court report that found inmates were kept too long in cells where lights or toilets were broken. |
