For the first time in at least 20 years, the inmate population of the Florida Department of Corrections has surpassed that of New York's prisons, making Florida's the third largest state prison system in the United States. As of last year, Texas led all states with an inmate population of 162,070, followed by California with 159,444 inmates; Florida with 72,406 inmates and New York with 67,534.
Florida's inmate population is multinational, with 4,717 coming from 93 other countries, according to the Department of Corrections. About half of the state's inmates are from Cuba and Mexico.
