Former Ark. Jail Inmate Sues Over Miscarriage
By Fort Smith Times Record
Published: 05/20/2003

A Fort Smith woman is suing the Sebastian County (Ark.) sheriff, claiming she miscarried while in jail because she was denied medical care.
Talisa Deshon Pool, 28, was 22 weeks pregnant when she had a miscarriage May 13, 2001, in the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center.
Pool claims officials were aware she had bleeding and she requested to go to the emergency room.
She is suing the county, the sheriff and several current and former county employees, seeking unspecified compensatory damages for pain, suffering and emotional distress and punitive damages.
Pool was taken into custody May 8, 2001, after the unsuccessful appeal of a manslaughter conviction and 10-year prison sentence handed down by a Sebastian County jury in May 2000.
Upon being booked, Pool complained that she was passing blood and was taken to a licensed practical nurse at the jail who told her she needed to rest and keep her feet elevated, according to the lawsuit.
Three days later, Pool was transferred to the Benton County Jail to await a bed in the Arkansas Department of Correction. But Benton County officials refused to accept Pool because of the bleeding observed while she was being processed into the jail, according to the lawsuit.
After returning to the SCADC that day, Pool was taken to a registered nurse at the jail who told her she just needed to rest and refused to give her anything for pain, according to the lawsuit.
Late on May 12, 2001, the lawsuit alleges Pool began having contractions - in addition to the bleeding - and a detention deputy told her to put her feet up.
About two hours later in the early hours of May 13, 2001, Pool delivered the female child into her jail uniform, and a deputy finally called an ambulance, according to the lawsuit.
Pool remains in the ADC with an expected September parole date.
