Teams Begin Hawaii Prison Shakedown

Prison officials began a 'shakedown' at the Halawa Correctional Facility Tuesday, searching inmates and cells for contraband. The new warden said he wants to make sure everything at the prison is secure.
Sheriff's deputies were posted at the entrance to Halawa Correctional Facility while officers patrolled the rooftops.
The shakedown began at 8:30 a.m. at the facility's medium security area. The prison's new warden, former Oahu Community Correctional Center chief Clayton Frank called for the shakedown because of a booming prison population.
'Anytime there's a drastic rise in the population, there's always concerns about the safety of inmates and, and, and staff,' Frank said.
Frank said there are 1,287 inmates in medium security; up by 50 inmates from the time he became Halawa warden just over three weeks ago.
The shakedown also follows recent arrests involving drugs at the prison.
During the shakedown, inmates were strip-searched and then sent to a designated area while corrections personnel looked through their cells. Officers are looking for more than just drugs and contraband in the cells.
'See if there's any physical defects in the facility, and to note it and to make any kind of corrective actions that we need to do,' Frank said.
Prison officers in training are also involved in the search.
'We had the ability to use some of the recruits that are currently in recruit training class, as part of their training, to participate in the shakedown here,' Frank said.
In all, some 150 officers, deputies and recruits conducted the search.
Frank said the search could take anywhere from one to five days, depending on what's found.
