Seeking to recover more than $100,000 in housing costs, the state has filed a civil lawsuit against a man serving a ten-year prison sentence. The lawsuit filed in Rock Island County Circuit Court by the Illinois attorney general's office this week names 34-year-old Randy Turner who is currently incarcerated at the East Moline Correctional Center. The lawsuit argues that Turner should reimburse the state $115,836 for housing him from May 19, 1997, to Oct. 28, according to court records. He is the only defendant named in the lawsuit. Scott Mulford, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, said the state will occasionally sue inmates to recover housing costs if it is believed that the inmate is able to pay those costs. About 20 such lawsuits have been filed this year, he added. "From time to time, the DOC will make referrals to this office when they believe there is reason to get some dough from these guys when they come out," Mulford said. Turner was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1997 after being convicted in Cook County of vehicular hijacking, possession of narcotics, delivery of cocaine and retail theft. He is scheduled to be paroled on July 17, 2006, according to state Department of Correction records. |
