DNA test results released Friday support a Death-Row inmate's claim that he wasn't present when a Gary, Ind. couple was fatally shot 17 years ago. Darnell Williams has been on Death Row for 16 years, and came within three days of being executed this summer before then-Gov. Frank O'Bannon issued a reprieve to allow the genetic testing of droplets of blood found on Williams' shorts after the shootings. Now, Williams should be removed from Death Row, his lawyer and the former prosecutor who convicted him say. But Indiana Attorney General Steve Carter will oppose clemency for Williams, said Carter's spokeswoman, Staci Schneider. "This case has been through the courts and upheld," she said. "We would defend his conviction and sentence." |
